Q: Can I raise a dorm bed to put a desk under it?

In our wood shop, we could possibly make any size, including very tall risers that could raise a dorm bed to put a desk under it.  But we also have to use good judgment in what products we offer, so our maximum riser lift height is 9″.  Plus, we don’t make risers that are stackable for the same reason.

Raising a dorm bed to create space for a desk underneath is a common way to maximize the limited square footage of a dorm room. There are a few different ways to do this, each with their own set of pros and cons. Here are a few options to consider:

  1. Bed Risers: These are plastic or wooden blocks that stack under the legs of the bed to raise it off the ground. They are inexpensive and easy to use, but they do not increase the storage space underneath the bed as much as some other options.
  2. Bed Lifters: These are similar to bed risers, but they have a larger surface area and can raise the bed higher off the ground. This can provide more space for a desk underneath, but they can be a bit more expensive than bed risers.
  3. Bed Lofting Kits: These are sets of hardware that are used to lift the bed frame off the ground and create a platform underneath. This can create a lot of space underneath the bed, but they can be more difficult to assemble and may require drilling holes into the bed frame.
  4. Custom beds: Some dorm bed providers offering bed options that come with a built-in elevation system and can make the bed elevated to a certian hight.

Whichever option you choose, make sure to measure the space underneath your bed before purchasing to ensure that the bed will be raised to the right height for your needs.

When raising your bed, it’s important to keep the safety concerns in mind. The bed should be stable and should not wobble once it’s elevated. Make sure to check the weight limits for the bed risers, bed lifters, or bed lofting kit you’re using, as well as any other safety precautions outlined by the manufacturer.

Once you’ve raised your bed, you can add a desk underneath it and enjoy the extra space and functionality in your dorm room.

Please note that some dorms may have specific rules and safety regulations, you should check the dorm rules before you make any changes.
